west coast just north of the Indiana border. New Buffalo Michigan
- the glorious summertime sunsets along the lakeshore recall dusk
along Florida's Gulf Coast -- except, of course, for the greater
likelihood of seeing the aurora borealis after nightfall. It is about
a 90-minute drive from Chicago and the first stop for many visitors
to Michigan entering from Indiana on eastbound Interstate 94.
Once you are here, you'll discover
New
Buffalo is situated at the point of two wonderful, historic roadways:
US-12 (Pulaski Highway) and Red Arrow Highway. One takes the northern
route along the coast of Lake Michigan, the other leads to Detroit
through the rolling farm lands of southwest Michigan. Both highways
have something in common – great places to shop
for antiques! From road side stands, yard sales and estate sales
to antique malls, New Buffalo and the surrounding area has long been
an antique shopper's destination of choice.
BRIEF HISTORY
Located on the shores of Lake Michigan at the
mouth of the Galien River. Officially recognized in 1836 and in the
early years as a safe harbor for ships traveling the Great Lakes.
Known as the Southwest Gateway to Michigan, New Buffalo is the cornerstone
city and capitol of Harbor Country® and houses the Michigan Travel
Center on Interstate 94, and the seat of the Harbor Country Chamber
of Commerce, which gave its name to the 8-city region in 1981.
The
spectacular views of Lake Michigan and the harbor from the downtown
district is the center of Harbor Country activity; even for wild
gulls, geese and ducks who line up daily at the banks to be fed by
willing visitors.
