The village
is located on the shores of Lake Michigan and on the Indiana/Michigan
state border, hence the name Michiana. It is known
for its quaint log cabins, many of them dating to the 1920s.
BRIEF HISTORY
A famous Michiana landmark was a Signal Oak at the corner of Michiana
and Powhattan Drives. Early surveyors marked the tree's trunk to signal
the Indiana-Michigan state line. Recognizing the tree's importance,
The Long Beach Company built and amphitheater around the tree and used
the site as an entertainment center for prospective buyers.
The community's developers honored the area's
first residents, the Indians, by using names such as Pokagon and
Seminole for the Village's meandering roads. The area that is known
as Michiana (Michigan side) was originally called "Michigan
Shores".
